The opening of this film provides a foundation that Besson uses to build an expansive, sprawling, and diverse world that feels lived in. The origin of Alpha is creative, imaginative, and feels grounded. All of the action sequences are exciting, well shot, and well executed. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevinge both deliver decent performances. Their chemistry is believable both as partners and as possible love interests for each other.

My one big negative of this film is the pacing. It starts with the run-time. The film needed to be about 15 minutes shorter. This causes the pace to pick up just a little too late in the film. My other negative is that a few of the supporting characters lack depth.

This film is one of the most original films in the past 10 years. It is full breathtaking visuals and builds an amazing fully built world. In a day of carbon copy franchises, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets gives an opportunity for a fresh new franchise. I would highly suggest you go see this film in IMAX or 3D (if you like that sort of thing).
