  • The Adjustment Bureau is absolutely frustrating. Firstly what genre even is this? Romance? Sci-Fi? Thriller? This has all the right ingredients but unfortunately what we get is one of the most forceful plots ever. Let me start off by saying Emily Blunt is great in this, she has charisma and actually tried. Matt Damon and Anthony Mackie were fine, nothing special. There were some great tracking shots as the characters go through doors (which act like portals). The story had plenty of themes: love, free will and fate. The chemistry between Damon and Blunt was good although slightly forced. But my God, MY GOD is the plot forced! There is nothing subtle about this, half the script is explaining "oh everyone has a path they must follow" or "destiny beats love" (which predictably we know is not the case). It's just horrendous. I really dislike screenplays where they treat the audience like children. Oh and why are the "angels", "case operatives" or whoever the flip they are unable to use their powers near water? WHY!? It's never explained and just doesn't make sense. The "chairman" wants to limit their powers for no apparent reason...oh no wait, so that our lead characters have a chance to be together. That's why. The film is well made, don't get me wrong and there are good qualities...it's just infuriatingly preachy and full of conveniences. I can't rate it lower than a 5/10, but it's definitely not getting a higher rating.
