There’s always a method to the madness when it comes to making any movie look like genuine art and “The Farewell” is, in my opinion, one of this years greatest masterpieces. It matches or parallels the construct of a painting: looks simple at first glance but once you start to learn more about the origins of its time and the delicacy and care put into making it, it makes traversing through each and every detail satisfactory and something worth scaling over. A24 once again delivers in a film which is not only the very example why I love dramas and comedies and the art of film in general but this particular movie has one of the best factors for almost everything: the structure, the writing, the complex characters, the surprisingly in-depth morals and themes and honestly, it’s one of the few films that actual felt.....human.

I think what makes this movie so well is not just it’s message but it’s simplicity. Nothing is glossed over or taken to the extreme, just the basic of melodies or music or cinematography or even the slightest expression of a person’s face can sell the entire scene for you because every other minute of this movie counts for something. The story actually means something of value and importance here: We lie all the time, sometimes for the right reason whether justified or not. The lies we tell each other and the lies we tell ourselves can be damaging regardless of what you do it for especially if you haven’t fully discovered the truth behind some forms of deception. It’s relatable on a believable and down to Earth level and......This film is absolutely beautiful.

We got ourselves another film of the year candidate here, ladies and gentlemen.
