  • The Place Beyond The Pines is a long crime drama. If a film's content is full of depth, detailed and worth telling then it justifies a long runtime. This film doesn't quite have enough. It does have plenty of great aspects. The cast is absolutely fantastic, Gosling and DeHaan were stand outs. I liked how the film clearly had three acts as the narrative shifted between each of the three main characters. The direction was clean, some nice long takes and I particularly was fond of the camera shots following Gosling whilst he was on the motorbike. The problem with the film, is that's its plot cannot justify 140 minutes and so therefore we get some massive drag time...many scenes were pointless and the momentum was lost for me. Oh and Rose Byrne was criminally underused. Could be a difficult rewatch, but this was an enjoyable crime drama.
