If Fantasy Island didn’t teach SONY anything about Jeff Wadlow, then this movie has to be their definitive wakeup call because “Bloodshot” should be labeled as Category M.A, for mental assassination. They just keep making this hard on themselves whenever they take a premise that’s so dumb and unapologetically 2000’s and try to slap on this macho-like hardcore Memento doppelgänger storyline on top of each other in hopes that the two will stick. Newsflash, it didn’t work because Wadlow doesn’t seem to understand that cheesy silliness and grimy gritty darkness induced audience apathy don’t mesh together most of the time. If that wasn’t bad enough, the complete lack of character development, wooden acting, distracting CG, inconsistency in pacing and tone, lack of compelling direction from David S.F. Wilson and the dreaded Wadlow-mindfucks here (Guess that’s what I’m calling the twists now) make his other twists and almost half of the components in his previous two movies look way better by comparison.

As an action/adventure movie and even as an origin story, it can’t equal its own brawns with brains because every single time it sets up something interesting, showcases a sweet moment or gives us a fun action scene, it jumps straight back to basics, goes back to playing it safe or throws more unnecessary threads of fodder your way. Hell, even when those moments do come into fruition, they come so few and far in-between. It’s not boring in its entirety because there’s a few cheesy moments that come and go here and there and I know I’m supposed to turn my brain off for movies like this....but how am I supposed to do that if the film is so unaware of how cheesy it’s own production is?

Valiant Cinematic Universe, huh? Might wanna hit the reset button for that.
