  • Scary Movie 3 (.5?) is one of my ultimate guilty pleasures. Much like its predecessors, it's not a good film. Fortunately, it's such a massive improvement over the second instalment that there is a sense of reinvigoration for the franchise. A news reporter is sent to investigate mysterious crop circles ('Signs') where a deathly video tape ('Rings') is rapidly killing all who watch it, including a wannabe rapper ('8 Mile'). The vulgarity is kept to a minimum and instead just plain old stupidity is injected into every scene. Ranging from driving over children, Michael Jackson's plastic nose, Charlie Sheen's acting, Pamela Anderson's bouncy jugs and a rap battle that ends with a KKK reference. Obscene and offensive? Yes, but it's actually relatively funny to watch. I'm probably juxtaposing myself and being hypocritical against the previous films...but there is something about this that tickles my testicles. The scenes involving Brenda makes my life complete. "Cindy...the TV's leaking..." is a standout but it's Hall's delivery of the line "now who the *insert expletive* threw that!" that sends me into hyperdrive. I was howling. I remember rewinding that three second clip and programming it on loop, it made me laugh that much. Removing Wayans' vulgarity and replacing it with Mazin and Proft's arguably more intelligent screenplay was a smart move for the franchise. It actually felt like a cohesive plot this time! Oh, and Simon Cowell gets shot multiple times. Some would call that sweet justice. As always, some of the jokes don't land, the film references become tiresome, the '8 Mile' parody slugs along for too much of the runtime and the entire third act just lost the humorous momentum that was built up. But underneath my cold lifeless body, I feel warmth for this flick for all the wrong reasons. It's just so damn great if you allow yourself to be lost in the stupidity and ridiculousness of the parodies. I live in hope that this franchise can continue and get stronger...*cough*
