It’s become apparent that SONY’s common thread in their films as of late has been one step forward and at least three steps back. “Black and Blue”, unfortunately, is yet another step BACKWARDS for this continuous trend. This story had a lot of potential; there was a tale to be told here about the balance of being both black and a police officer which could’ve reflected into our generation into the present day but this movie is so damn stubborn and stingy with its subject matter, it never feels like telling it and thus, no legitimate risks are taken in this carbonated, cookie-cutter clone look-a-like of Training Day where everything this movie did, Training Day did better. It’s action sequences are tolerable and the acting is far better than what a movie of this caliber deserves but my god, SONY, you should be better than this.

Deon Taylor doesn’t shy away from any of the formulaic beats or stereotype-driven rules that drives a drama of this magnitude and I’ve noticed a few of his little quirks that followed through from The Intruder: his plots are really simple but he ends up slightly over-complicating them by trying to make a message out of nothing and then not even trying to follow up on it; this film actually had a message to tell but once again, it doesn’t seem to give a damn about how lazy it was, considering there was a point to tell and they didn’t bother to even get to the point.

Mr. Taylor, this has not been your year.
