  • Getaway is a title that should be taken literally. Go! Run away. Get as far away as you can. Don't succumb to this incoherent mess like I did, you all deserve better than that. A former race driver's wife is kidnapped to which he receives a phone call and must follow the instructions given precisely. This includes stealing a car, stealing a girl, stealing (or temporarily holding) flash drives filled with accounts and stealing your God damn mind. All I can say about Solomon's latest directorial efforts, is that it's mystifyingly incomprehensible. No plot, no character development, no nothing. Just car chases followed by police cars getting destroyed followed by explosions and topping off with Gomez trying to act, and it killed me inside. Rinse and repeat. I already had a headache when I started watching this, suffice to say I finished it with a migraine. The lack of plot brings no driving force to its characters. Don't even get me started on Gomez' character who can hack mainframes with a few taps because she is a "skilled hacker". Also why is everyone in Bulgaria American? Why is she even there!? The constant switching between mounted cameras inside and outside of the Shelby Mustang every half a second made for disorientating action that were poorly edited. Hawke atleast tries his best but gets no results thanks to a script that honestly believes watching carnage ensue in Sofia for ninety minutes is more exciting than ramping up some tension. The chase sequences, aside from the final POV chase which was actually well executed, were instantly forgettable. The Shelby sustains quite some damage, with Hawke smashing the car against police vehicles, but for some unknown reason never shows it. Not even a dent on the bonnet! It's as if it acquired the power star invincibility item from 'Mario Kart'! Urgh. To be honest I'm struggling to write anything about this. So forgettably generic and amateurish, that it makes several B-movies look stupendous. To think this was going to be a remake of 1972's 'The Getaway'...
