There’s a bunch of different ways I can go about this but I think it’s best to depict this by using comparisons to The Quiet Man and The Order 1886: both of those are games that want to be movies except that the movies are awful. “Gemini Man” is a clone-lookalike of Looper that wants to be a video game but the video game ranges from being scarcely underdeveloped at best to being experimentally dead on arrival. The story is completely subpar and predictable, it’s tonally inconsistent and the script is completely faulty. But I dare say the CGI, 3D effects and high frame rate are up there as one of, if not the worst aspects cause the de-aging effect is part of this whole experiment this movie desperately wanted to exploit to the point where it blew up in their face. They wasted so much time on trying to make sure they got this gimmick in the right place and the right time that not only do all other elements fall utterly flat but the problems only gets worse the longer the film goes on. When so much emphasis is placed on just the technology aspect of a project, every other aspect falls flat and creates a very disinteresting movie because the other factors that contribute just as much to the project isn’t given enough attention and just fly under the radar. It all plays second fiddle to this gimmick that’s nowhere near as revolutionary as they proclaim it to be.

Take nothing away from the cinematography, the stellar set pieces and action sequences and especially the acting. The performances are far better than what this movie deserves but with everything else the film throws at us, it’s a shame that no one came up with a story interesting enough to validate the tech that makes Gemini Man possible. If you’re going to use de-aging with a high frame rate, you better make sure the effects you’re working on age better than a PlayStation cutscene, especially if it’s a movie TWENTY YEARS in the making.

Yeah, this film was stuck in development hell. Go figure.
