  • Incredibles 2 retains the incredible status of the original and acts as a heroic continuation. 14 years! I've patiently waited for over a decade to witness the aftermath of "The Underminer". Was it worth the wait? You betcha superhero mask it was! I am absolutely relieved to say that this is a worthy successor, in every sense. Elastigirl is hired by a private investor in an attempt to make superheroes legal again, whilst Mr Incredible is tasked with staying at home and looking after the children. The parenting role reversal makes for a refreshing narrative change that naturally injects family humour into the political commentary of the story. The eternal struggles of school mathematics, angsty boyfriend trouble and a baby who has atleast seventeen different powers. The abrupt tonal shifts between the sharp action of crime fighting and the frequently hilarious shenanigans at home were seamless. Yet, the dialogue really shines when the whole family are brought together. A casual midnight takeaway allows the natural banter and personalities of each family member to shine through. Conceptualising the realisation that a family will always work well together as a unit. Bird's astute direction, accompanied with Pixar's wondrous updated computer generated animation, ensures that it acts as a full continuation as opposed to a separate film. Complete with memorable characters and quotes, particularly Jack Jack and Edna who stole the film singlehandedly. The orchestrated musical score is as harmonious as ever and complemented the frantic set pieces beautifully. The villain was underdeveloped, with their motives more opaque than transparent, which unfortunately also made for a rushed conclusion. The plot is somewhat formulaic, with one twist being incredibly predictable, which does insinuate how safe this sequel is with no vast amendments to the plot's structure. However, as a family film and a sequel to my second favourite animation of all time, it quenched my thirst and then some. Amusing, action packed and absolutely incredible. Don't make me wait another 14 years for a third chapter...
