Raunchy, refreshing and pulling out most of if not all the stops, “Booksmart” crashes the party, aces the exam with flying colors and gets a solid “A” from the school of hard knocks. It’s taken me a while to discover a high-school buddy duo movie with this much compassion and love for the genre considering how hard it is to successfully portray comedies in a positive light but somehow Olivia Wilde pulled it off. The storyline is both remarkable and meaningful yet ridiculously intuitive and exaggerated at the same time, each and every one of the characters are giddily charming, widely ridiculous, borderline fascinating or a mixture of all three, pacing is tight, tone was consistent, editing was fast yet stable, directing is very confident, it’s two main leads in Dever and Feldstein are a pitch perfect comedic duo with phenomenal chemistry and while it isn’t the funniest movie I’ve seen in recent memory, it is a close up and comer for funniest coming of age story I’ve seen in recent memory. There were so many moments of aggressive silliness yet sincere sentiment fused with clever, laugh-out-loud, unexpected humor and I was dying for well over most of the runtime.

This is one such comedy that pays homage to all other teen comedies and buddy comedy duos while also adding its own signature sense flair, style, pizazz to an already tired out formula to help set it apart, not to mention it also reminds the next graduating classes as well as those past classes that there’s nothing wrong with balancing all that hard work with some party time. Just don’t lose track of what and who you are on the journey to enjoying a successful life.

Oh and hope you don’t turn out like Gigi. Just.....no.
