  This film definitely does have problems. It's tone can be inconsistent, and it is at least 30 minutes too long. But damn me because I did greatly enjoy this film. Mel Gibson gives a really good performance as Benjamin Martin, and Heath Ledger gives an endearing performance. The other characters do feel a little short, and one dimensional. Not to mention Jason Isaac's villain just feels way to vile and evil to be realistic. Still enjoyable however, and the film does boast some interesting battle sequence, though nowhere near the level of great epics like 300 or Braveheart. Still The Patriot is well worth a watch. If you have the time.
