User Review

  • The Book Thief is yet another WWII adaptation from a critically acclaimed book. This time following a girl who is welcomed into a family hiding a Jew. She soon starts using literary skills as a mean of escapism, words are after all a powerful tool. This was a mixed bag, but overall rather enjoyable. The cast was great, always good to see Geoffrey Rush in a good role. Musical score was noteworthy and any effects that were used were pretty decent. The story was captivating however, I found in many occasions to be way too emotionally manipulating. It purposefully tried to make you feel sad or cry but it's within these moments that the film felt very "Hollywood" and unfortunately didn't affect me. That being said, it's a good film and worthy of a watch.
