  • WHAT I LIKED: 'The Last of the Mohicans,' sees director Michael Mann go from strength to strength as he uses his atmosphere-building talents to create this terrifying world of conflict in which the central characters feel small and helpless in a way that few war movies ever manage. Yes with its genuine physical scope and atmospheric heft, this brilliant piece of work brings home the hardship of these characters' situations really well, and this is thanks to brilliant cinematography, a great score from Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman (that's again slightly over-used by Mann) as well as excellent performances where Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe both stand out despite everything around them by portraying their struggle and love for each other so brilliantly.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It is a film that demands you have some prior knowledge of the French and Indian war, as it does occasionally lean a little to heavily into the politics without ever truly explaining it. Crucially though, this is also at the expense of the potentially emotional central romance.
VERDICT: A war movie that dwarfs its characters' situations with sheer atmospheric heft, 'The Last of the Mohicans,' is another hit for Michael Mann, even if it should have spent more time developing its central romance to truly bring the emotion home.
