  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Miss Sloane,' is an engaging court-room thriller not just because its legal battles and themes are so exhilarating, but also because this is just as much a film about the titular character where the whole story really rests on the shoulders of the brilliant Jessica Chastain. Indeed rather than solely getting bogged down by the complex side of things, this film neatly ties its political and thematic explorations into the titular character's arc by dragging her personally through the thick of the issues discussed and allowing Chastain to build a snappy, engaging and troubled character around everything to elevate the film beyond what you might expect. This is helped hugely by a script that often brings Sorkin-level dialogue in its snappier moments and a narrative structure that flips back and forward in time to play its frequently-discusses trump card in exciting and invigorating ways, and in the end you have a thoroughly engaging and down-right brilliant film that builds a perfect combination of gritty tension and hope, and crucially an extremely powerful and troubled character to hook you.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Some of the dialogue and direction is actually rather clunky, which does occasionally take you out of it when you're right in the thick of the excitement.
VERDICT: A gritty and engaging legal drama that rests on the shoulders of Jessica Chastain's titanic performance, 'Miss Sloane,' will have you hooked from start to finish because of how it combines the political with the personal. What a great film.
