The BFG is no ordinary bone-crunching giant. He is far too nice and jumbly. It's lucky for Sophie that he is. Had she been carried off in the middle of the night by the Bloodbottler, or any of the...

  • The BFG is just scrum-diddly-whiggly-whifflesnoggily-fine. It's not Steven Spielberg's finest film, I think we can all agree. I'm not sure it's a film that any of us wanted, hence the poor box office results. Anyway, in this adaptation our big friendly giant kidnaps an orphan...then go to a big dream tree...then he abandons her...ummm...oh, The Queen is in it...not to mention the other nasty giants...ummm...yeah. It's a mess. That beautiful coherent sentence I just wrote clearly describes the unfocused plot. In fact, is there really one? If any plot is established, it was halfway through the film! Not the most engaging of stories. What The BFG is though is an exercise of how far computer generated effects have come. Visually this is stunning, couldn't fault it. The combination of Sophie and the complete CG world that she inhabited was seamless. Definitely transported me into Giant Country! Mr. Spielberg is one of the best film makers of all time, he is able to capture the magic and fantasy elements of any film and utilise them to their maximum potential. He does the same here, lots of creativity and imagination that will be sure to keep the younger audience glued to the screen in awe. This highlights my main point of the film, it's clearly aimed towards younger audiences. Older viewers may struggle with the boring "plot". Oh, and there is plenty of crude humour however it is justifiable. Giants aren't exactly well mannered so do expect, what I can only describe as, a lot of farting. I mean, too much. So much so, that there is a scene where The Queen actually farts. Brave Spielberg, very brave...not too sure how I felt about that personally. Must not forget, I thought Mark Rylance was the perfect voice for The BFG! Sophie who was played by Ruby Barnhill was fine, nothing outstanding...perhaps slightly cheesy. So whilst this is not Spielberg's best work, in fact probably one of his weakest, there is no denying that it is visually stunning that exudes imagination and creativity. One for the kids.
