When you choose to make a dark comedy it's important to commit to darkness. Martin McDonagh and Paul Thomas Anderson are both fine examples of this, blending sweet and sour like a Michelin star chef. Taika Waititi has succeeded in this in the past with his quaint mockumentary What we do in the shadows, followed by the repetitive, if not entertaining, television series.

Sadly, JoJo Rabbit pulls it's punches and never leaps like a march hair. Instead it hops like the runt of the litter. Taking Nazi Germany and making it a Wes Anderson film is a terrible idea so dark humour is needed to show self awareness. And it is present but it is never loud.

It's true that towards the end of the film JoJo begins to see the bloodshed of war but it's a meagre representation of the true horror of World War Two. I wasn't offended, I couldn't be since I enjoy Inglorious Basterds, but it lacked the poignancy and the edge I was looking for.
