  • Thelma & Louise is THE road trip film. Two women are caught up in a crime and are on the run from the police across America. This is a difficult film to categorise, it has both serious and comedic elements. But what is prevalent is the underlying theme of female empowerment. Thelma and Louise share a special friendship throughout and both Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon capture that perfectly. Their great chemistry was evident and made for some excellent acting. A young Brad Pitt was also good. The script was sharp and contained some great one liners that made for some memorable scenes. The talented Ridley Scott did a fantastic job directing this, he knew this was about the characters as opposed to car chases and shootouts. A massive problem however, and this is my opinion, is that the film was very...how to put it...anti-male. Nearly every male character was portrayed as either violent, disgusting or just plain rude to our female leads. The message just is not subtle and unrealistic in reality. Let's face it though, this is the quintessential 90's road trip film that is very enjoyable. Oh and the ending is perfect.
