So.....yeah. “Serenity (2019)” is NOT, I repeat, NOT the worst film of 2019 as dozens of people have claimed it was but there’s no denying the film was pretty bad in a lot of areas.

Outside of Steven Knights somewhat competent directing, I didn’t find much that I either invested myself into or connected with. The acting is completely hit-or-mess, the tone switches sporadically in a moments notice and even if you’re gonna make the argument that the film is unpredictable and it keeps you on your toes, how are you even supposed to care about any of these characters let alone the story? Nobody crosses the line of being one-dimensional but I still found it hard to care. Not to mention you have to make your film unpredictable in a way in which it STILL makes sense. What looks and plays like a simple story takes an automatic detour for a rather messy sci-fi thriller that’s neither satisfying or engaging, it pulls messages straight out of thin air to bullshit you into thinking that the film is much deeper than it actually is and the twist was pretty much thrown in after the fact to give the film a pointless and incomprehensible gimmick not to mention it makes the film look so ridiculously pretentious like its deeply in denial of how NOT clever it is.

So yes, I do think this is a bad movie.....considering this was released in the January dumping grounds early this year. But at least it’s the right kind of bad movie: the kind in which you’ll be able to look back and get a kick out of laughing at because it looks too good to be true. The film is unintentionally hilarious whenever it tries to be serious (which was all the freaking time) and it butchers its quality as a result. If you can find some enjoyment out of this, that’s fine but for me, I can’t ignore its flaws due to its faulty writing.
