  The Handmaiden is a seductive maze of lies and lust. Much like the seminal work of Bong Joon Ho Parasite, no character is what they seem. Park Chan Wook's signature directing style returns, with stylized closeups, grotesque violence, black comedy, and a choppy regiment of filming which juxtaposes wonderfully with the film's elegant set design. While I don't believe it pushes boundaries in portrayals of LGTBQ+ relationships in cinema, the romance is approached with affection. The film ends with the two together, a reminder of the film's true meaning, that of the value of love.
