Das Boot is one hell of a film. Reviews aren't that common for me but sometimes a film so good crops up that I feel it is my duty. I should clarify I am reviewing the directors cut, which is 59 minutes longer and far superior in my book. Also, despite this release being listed as 2015, this was a 1981 film.

As far as war films go, this is one of the absolute best. It's 3 and a half hours of nerve-shredding, nail-biting, hair-raising suspense, which when it comes to films is my absolute favourite. The tension is razor sharp, and the atmosphere is electric with the omnipresent danger of the submarine environment.

It must be stressed that anyone with claustrophobia will freak out watching this. 95% of the film takes place in the confines of a German U-Boat, which is a maze of cramped corridors. Personally, I'm terrified of the ocean, and the sound of the creaks echoing when the boat was 200 metres down was enough to put me on the edge of my seat.

On top of all this intensity, are some great characters and even better performances. Jurgen Prochnow is fantastic as the captain, and the film is really carried on his shoulders.

Lastly, Wolfgang Petersen's phenomenal direction here is really the highlight. The mixture of huge long takes, rapid editing, imposing silences, violent camerawork and suspense which is drawn out to unbearable lengths make this one of the all-time greats.

Quite frankly one of the best films I've ever seen.
