  • A Haunted House drains the life out of ‘Scary Movie’, producing something aggressively unfunny. Marlon Wayans needs to stop. Immediately. His career will never reach the heights of ‘Requiem for a Dream’ ever again. How? How does he obtain the funding for these continuously insulting projects? I cannot fathom anyone remotely enjoying his comedy. ‘Scary Movie’ and its sequels can often be found under lists entitled “guilty pleasures”. The first three in particular, popularised the parody sub-genre in a contagious way that resulted in a plethora of abominations being produced. ‘Epic Movie’, ‘Disaster Movie’, ‘Meet the Spartans’. The list, rather annoyingly, is endless.

Wayans, attempting to replicate his ‘Scary Movie’ success (which by the way, was a timely release for the new millennium), parodies a bunch of new-ish horror films by turning them into fart jokes. I mean...I mean really? Have we not evolved as a species to no longer class gas excretion from our orifices as humour? Five minutes in. Boom! Fart. Last gag of the film? Fart in the face and a good ol’ sniff afterwards. Made me gag just thinking at how Wayans believed this was still hilarious. So the premise mostly spoofs ‘Paranormal Activity’, with a few other January box office flops like ‘The Devil Inside’ and ‘The Last Exorcism’ for good measure. From smoking a blunt with the ghost to standing by the bed in the middle of the night and bustin’ out some moves for the camera. Any shenanigans that actually happened were dead upon arrival.

I cannot overstate how unfunny this film was. The main issue being how insulting the “jokes” were. Homophobia, racism and enough sexual innuendos to start its own cooking show with Nigella Lawson. Seriously! Penetrating teddy bears? For five whole minutes? Come on! In case none of these offend you, Wayans also included some “humour” about male rape too! Lucky you. Insensitive, self-destructive and borderline outrageous. A Haunted House is so terrible, that the film itself needs to be exorcised and sexually exploited for the “lols”. Wait, there’s a sequel!? Motherfu...
