As a retelling of a classic tale, “The Kid Who Would Be King” rightfully earns its crown if not only just. Its a very good natured, wholehearted adventure flick with a feel-good vibe surrounding its abundance of throwbacks and references. Solid cast, decent acting and very clever directing from Joe Cornish. For this only being the second film he directed, I bet he had a lot of rust to shake off before jumping back in as both director and screenwriter. The weirder the movie becomes, the more it basks within its glory and embraces its lovable goofy charming nature for as long as it can, not being too dark, too edgy or going completely over the top. However, it does clock in at two hours and is a tad but overwritten and the villain could’ve used more screen-time but it’s a small price to pay for our entertainment.

You can still debate whether or not this film is another form of cliche-city that belongs on the list; it’s like that way to me. But the least you can do with something cliche is format it or transform it into something worth while and that’s exactly what this flick does. It’s just one of those films that can make you think a little on but for the most part, you can turn your brain off and enjoy the film for what it is as a film for all ages.
