  • WHAT I LIKED: Think 'Get Out,' or 'Don't Worry Darling;' Zoe Kravitz's directorial debut 'Blink Twice,' is one of those films where you watch characters slowly catch up to the horror of their reality, and eventually do something about it.

We know from the off that things are all a bit sinister when a philanthropist Slater King (Channing Tatum) invites one of his workers Frida (Naomi Ackie) to his private island. Not only is he introduced as an abuser in therapy who promptly asks his guests to hand in their phones the moment they arrive at his retreat, but Kravitz uses lots of not-so-subtle cues to build tension; from shots that foreshadow stabbing or writhing wrists, to the mysterious servants and groundsmen on the island.

As someone hopelessly attracted to King's power, Frida is foolishly enamored by the whole thing to start with, and that certainly says something about how easy it is to let wealth and glamour mask evil. But when unexplainable things start happening, she has to smile and nod her way through the incessant "aren't you having a good time," questions to mask a growing sense of fear. That feels very real, and when Frida uncovers the full truth, it cuts especially deep because it's not glossed over or sugar coated at all, and is instead revealed as a true Epstein Island affair. That makes the final act of revenge all the more satisfying, as we get a glorious final explosion of the building tension.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Things do get a little repetitive as we watch the parties repeat and Frida's suspicions grow amidst all the obvious signs. Plus she doesn't get too much development herself, as she starts out as someone attracted by power, and her final act of revenge only emphasises that.

VERDICT: 'Blink Twice,' follows a woman attracted to power who slowly realises she's trapped on some kind of Epstein Island, and eventually take a satisfying final act of revenge.
