  • WHAT I LIKED: Kelly Fremon Craig's 'Are You There God, It's Me Margaret,' is a lovely coming of age movie about a girl (Abby Ryder Fortson) moving to New Jersey and contending with the anxieties of periods, boobs and choosing between her mother's (Rachel McAdams) Christianity and her father's (Benny Safdie) Judaism.

There are no real tensions or questions behind the narrative; you just get an hour and a half of Margaret comparing notes with her friends about their crushes and puberty, chatting to her family about which religion she wants to settle on, and often talking to God about it all in her bedroom. She's just trying to figure out what kind of person she wants to be, but the delight of it comes from how every moment is written and delivered so earnestly by Fremon Craig and her wonderful cast. The conversations these tweens have, and the worries her Mum expresses, are so refreshingly real, and they're both amusing and affecting as a result.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: For what it sets out to achieve, you can't fault it.

VERDICT: Kelly Fremon Craig's 'Are you there God, it's me Margaret,' is just such a refreshingly earnest and funny coming of age film.
