Sanjuro feels like the adequate thematic precursor to 'Ran', and I for one, cannot complain. While not nearly as epic and sprawling as the aforementioned film, Sanjuro is a significant improvement on Yojimbo, imbuing the story with thematic heft, while being even more humorous and entertaining than its predecessor. The story is carefully controlled, but unpredictable, and the last scene is nothing short of a clinic in creating tension; as a result, Kurosawa is able to craft what might be his most entertaining film, while also providing commentary on the soul of this crafty, witty, but inherently violent mercenary.
