  • Ladybird, a touching indie, marks Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, and for that I have to say it’s pretty fantastic. It revolves around a girl named Christine’s senior year in high school, and is roughly based off of that of the director growing up in Sacramento. It’s highly relatable and doesn’t take itself too seriously, while still implementing a good amount of drama and heart. Saoirse Ronan is delightful in the lead role, and pulls off an amazing rebellious teen, considering her roles in the past. The small quirks of her character do not overtake her character development and lessons learned, which is essential in a movie about acceptance. Major props to the realistic screenplay and hilarious references to 2002 technology and style, which it was right on the dot about. Her mother, which is the main conflicting character, is an attention grabbing presence that the viewer is rooting for the whole time to just change and show some motherly love. The romantic interests of Lucas Hedges and Timothèe Chalamet play crucial roles in her to becoming a more compassionate person, and her best friend Julie is ultimately the highlight of this film (the prom scene ❤️). The film is very much a love letter to Sacramento, which I unfortunately can’t relate to as I’m located in the Midwest, but it’s trueness to the city was a lovely touch. Ronan definitely deserves some noms for this role. A flaw that I could see was that it was rather short, and didn’t seem to wrap up some side plots, so that the ending felt not as developed in conclusion. However, it’s first and foremost about the journey of Lady Bird finding her place to the world, which is something that most movie watchers can sympathize with and really appreciate. Lady Bird is a smart and well crafted story of a teenage girl and her transition into adulthood that I highly recommend as one of the best coming of age movies of the year.
