Ladybird is this beautifully real creation of the turmoil of adolescence. Gerwig is one of these rare golden directors who approaches film making with a tenderness as well as a strong artistic direction and I am impatiently waiting to see ‘Little Women’.
Gerwig is able to tap in to the idea of nostalgia without nullifying it’s awkward nature. Perfecting the boundary between the heart breaking and hilarious.
Visually it is stunning. The motif of aesthetic buildings in A24 films ; unbroken. An ode to class divide with ladbird’s idea of ‘living on the wrong side of the tracks’.
However, there were 2 particular moments which stood out to me.
The first when Danny visits Christine at her part time job and breaks down. There is something so innocent and raw to the moment. The performance is incredible.
Another fleeting moment which stood out was the use of mirroring shots. Christine is mirrored with her mum in the last moments of the film driving around Sacramento. In this moment Christine’s sense of identity seems revealed- a moment of clarity as, away from home, she realises the beauty of difficult adolescence.
