  • WHAT I LIKED: About a Boy is everything you'd expect from a film about a shallow Hugh Grant character learning the importance of love and real human connection, but that's no bad thing really. It features a touching yet predictable central arc that translates some themes that will toug at the heartstrings. It has believable if slightly over-played characters who all play off each other well and feel like real people. And it has enough sparky British humour in its script to stop it feeling too soppy. All of that is delivered well by its stellar cast and the end result is a fun and engaging romp that you'd have to be pretty cynical not to enjoy at least a little bit.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's hardly the most profound or nuanced film ever made, largely because the script spells everything out extremely overtly.

VERDICT: 'About a Boy,' is everything you'd expect it to be - a touching, funny, well-played Hugh Grant drama that's equally lacks much nuance in its writing.
