  • WHAT I LIKED: Films which involve a character in the present narrating a past story which comes to life are rarely particularly successful. 'Forest Gump' is one of the few examples that works well, and 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe' is another. Yes the key with these films - like with any character drama - is to not allow the sheer volume of obligatory narrative to get in the way of developing characters to an extent that you properly care about them in both the past and the future. This film does that rather well, and that's down to both the script (which adapts its novel source material sensibly) and the performances which bring the people to life pretty well without needing bags of development. It all comes together in the end rather well too where a thematic point sneaks in eventually, and when you couple that with a sprinkling of off-the-wall humour, you've got yourself a decent and engaging drama where you care about the characters.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The narrative is pretty full, and that does make things feel pretty obligatory rather than necessary interesting parts of character journeys.
VERDICT: A film that takes a busy narrative and still manages to build characters you care for, 'Fried Green Tomatoes' is a success because of its smart script and great performances.
