  • Just hearing that a movie was being directed by Clint Eastwood starring Tom Hanks was coming out this past weekend, I knew I had to go see it. I’m glad I did because this is a great movie, and definitely better than American Sniper. To start off stating the obvious, Tom Hanks was great in the movie as this pilot who had to take an insane chance to save the lives of the people aboard this plane. Aaron Eckhart also surprisingly gave a great performance in the film. The direction from Eastwood was great. The cinematography in the film was still Eastwood's signature black/gray look, but it fits the film, as the events took place in the winter. It did look great, though, as it was more visually appealing the some of his latest works. The script was simple, and not overcomplicated, which definitely fits the film it was in and the short 90-minute runtime. I feel like at times we would have dove into Sully’s personal life more, though, as the only real things we got were two flashbacks. By far, though, my favorite thing about the film was the sequences with the plane, and the entire crash itself. Those scenes were literally some of the best scenes I’ve seen in a film all year. It was intense and engaging watching the flight go from leaving the airport to landing in the Hudson. The special effects on the plane itself and with the entire sequence were great, and it did feel like I was watching a plane fly into the river. If I had to name some cons with the film, I did feel that this movie could have been longer. This movie probably could have been two hours and still be engaging, as I also felt that they could have gone into the investigation more. I could also complain that there were only two real characters in the movie, but it kind of makes sense why. Overall, Sully is a great drama with some of the best scenes of the year and a great Tom Hanks performance but felt very simple at times when it had to be more complex.
