  • The Star Trek franchise has been a rollercoaster ride in terms of their movies, but ever since JJ Abrams rebooted this saga in 2009, the movies were raised the bar and expected to have pulse-pounding action set pieces and out of this world adventure. Fans of the TV show and movies (also known as Trekkers) will definitely have fan service and can even recall easter eggs from the original franchise.

The movie mostly relies on the saga's biggest strengths - the well-crafted characters and their star-studded performers. The likeable performances of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and the supporting actors are indeed the highlights here. But the movie also diminishes by the saga's weakness - the main antagonist. Idris Elba's Kroll is not as compelling as Benedict Cumberbatch's Khan as a villain - his evil plan is unclear, so as his motives and drives.

The breathtaking visual effects and spectacular production design including the make-up, hairstyling, costumes and props help "Beyond" to be an adventurous sci-fi movie that could be both exciting and menacing. It is solidly familiar to the Star Trek universe, however, the familiarity gets too formulaic and predictable at times.

VERDICT: Beyond surely carries the legacy of the original beloved franchise and definitely works both as a Star Trek movie and exciting summer blockbuster.
