  • WHAT I LIKED: Scorsese's debut 'Who's That Knocking at my Door,' touches on the themes that he's gone back to time and time again throughout his career (and that he established further in 'Mean Streets'), but more so than anything it's a stand-out character piece where Harvey Keitel delivers his first performance and portrays a man struggling with what would be a real quandary in his difficult world. It's not that we pity him - in a way we root for him to do the honourable thing and distance himself from his horrible world and take the route that his good conscience seems to desire.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Much of the world-building where we see him indulging in his troubling activities feels rather dull after a while as Scorsese spends too much time enjoying the gangster stuff without a narrative - or as much snappy style as Mean 'Streets - to keep you engaged in that side of things.

VERDICT: The first of many Scorsese pictures all about conscience conflicting with lifestyle, 'Who's That Knocking at my Door,' is a must-see for Scorsese fans, even if it's not all that engaging all of the time.
