  • WHAT I LIKED: Dare I say it - probably the best way to describe the feeling you get from 'Inception' is the sense that director Christopher Nolan is letting his hair down a bit. Yes oddly enough, when compared to his other amazing filmography, it really is rather striking how much fun Inception actually has with itself as Nolan brings an unusual level of self-aware indulgence in his ambitious ideas and story to create more of a summer blockbuster feel. It's certainly not a vibe that one would expect then, but it is equally a very pleasant surprise that comes from the script - which leaves plenty of room for humour and grin-ensuing action - and the cast (in particular DiCaprio) who bring incredible life and whit to each scenario.
Of course though, we are still talking about Christopher Nolan, so don't think for a moment that any of the edge and intelligence is gone either because it quite simply hasn't. In fact, on a technical level Inception ranks right up there with the director's best, as it packs bags of conceptual ideas, breathtaking visuals, and crucially this time - a brilliantly interwoven lead character to hook and engage you in the whole experience.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Because of the way it deals each hand, it's not as profound and powerful as you might think, and some of the time it spends enjoying itself is time it could be delving even deeper into its themes and supporting characters.
VERDICT: Engaging, clever and downright fun; 'Inception' proves that if Nolan lets his hair down, it doesn't mean he lets a strand fall out of place. What a great blockbuster this is.
