  • WHAT I LIKED: Sequels are hard things to get right - especially when their predecessors are so brilliant - but 'Toy Story 2,' works as a textbook example as it develops on the original whilst delivering an even better and more engaging rollercoaster ride. Yes first and foremost what this sequel does is to delve further into the characters and themes from the first movie as we see Woody and his friends tested to new limits in the outside world as he's separated and finds himself in need of another rescue whilst everyone starts to come to terms with the fact that their kid is growing up. It's a bigger adventure, and that not only unlocks some new universal explorations of friendships and loyalty, it also makes for a film where the stakes are higher and there are more opportunities for fresh humour and visual prowess (an area where this film undoubtedly trumps the first by miles). All in all then it's a film with a narrative that furthers everything from the first film perfectly by raising the stakes but keeping all the charm and humour, and that makes it a huge success when it could have easily fallen short.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It arguably doesn't break new ground in the same way as the first one as the themes explored aren't overly different.
VERDICT: A sequel that does what all sequels should, 'Toy Story 2,' delves deeper into the series' characters and themes with a higher stakes story, and winds up an even better film than the first as a result.
