  • WHAT I LIKED: Ron Howard's 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas,' does at least translate the central theme of this story extremely clearly, and it does contain a fairly amusing theatrical performance from Jim Carrey.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The main problem with the film however is that none of the characters are really developed to an extent that they feel grounded or where you actually care about them, as everything is delivered so theatrically and in such a contrived manor that it all feels fake and weightless. That extends to the over-the-top performances and on-the-nose script, and to the horrible set design, and what you've got in the end here is a pretty dire Christmas movie that fails to retain engagement or unlock any sort of magic or intrigue at all.
VERDICT: 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas,' may have some funny moments with Jim Carrey, but overall it's a pretty laughable film that ultimately fails to build real engagement with its classic story thanks to its hugely contrived and on-the-nose execution. Ron Howard really ought to have known better than this.
