  • An insanely dense piece of entertainment art, Steve McQueen masterfully depicts the struggles of women in society against the high-octane thrills of an "all or nothing" heist situation. The tension created is legendary - pitting our heroes against all odds and decidedly inimical foes, whilst never losing sight of what draws us to their plights: the human condition, and inherent struggle. The movie deals with themes of corruption, police brutality, marriage and crime in very fresh and nuanced ways - McQueen using his apt ability for visually gut-wrenching story telling to have the narrative speak through the eyes of the women acting, and become greater than just a heist, or a character study. As a whole Widows may not be complex, and may leave a few loose ends or wanting story-lines, but the main ones definitely hit, and the performances are nothing short of exceptional, resulting in one of the year's most realized pictures.
