Considered by many a modern masterpiece, There Will Be Blood is grossly dark, boldly comic, and expertly crafted. It acts as a culmination of artists at the height of their craft as well as a depiction of the birth of capitalist America and the persona that fits that.

For when somebody mentions There WIll Be Blood, they will talk about Daniel Day-Lewis' twisted portrayal of Daniel Plainview. The character is deeply rich with subtly crafted motivations. Plainview never feels like a character. He is real and he is bathed in oil as black as his soul. However, it is important to applaud the other performances. Paul Dano relishes playing Eli Sunday, the ultimate bible basher, and Dillon Freasier has a doll-like quality, an innocence which is tainted by the bounteous black gold.

Jonny Greenwood's score is almost baroque with harsh, abrasive strings that sear into the landscape. In fact, it is almost as if the bleak desert is wailing, visualised in the column of hellfire which wreaks havoc one night at the derrick.
