  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Thunderbolts,' is about a rag-tag group of depressed and unfulfilled contract killers finding meaning in protecting people from harm. That's a simple but engaging take on the hero's arc which acknowledges that being exploited is often the primary cause of mental health struggles, and that's driven home further by the fact they start out working for a corrupt weapons dealer who's also the head of the CIA.

Those arcs do actually say something meaningful (heck, just painting the CIA in that kind of light automatically gets the film some extra brownie-points from me), and though the dialogue is largely comedic, their heart is brought to life well by lead actors Florence Pugh and David Harbour.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The plot that engineers those arcs is rather naff, as are the action set-pieces, and that ultimately means the film lacks any of the tension or excitement that the better Marvel movies have managed to achieve.

VERDICT: 'Thunderbolts,' comes from the right place with its heartfelt character arcs and message, but it's also not the most gripping of Marvel movies.
