The Safdies return with a sparkling cycle of failure. I found myself constantly questioning why I wanted to see Howard succeed. Was it his role as underdog? Or perhaps Sandler's pathos-centric performance? Either way, clearly Howard Ratner is a jewel. We literally get a microscopic look of Howard and he shimmers and shines just like the opal.
This film is, like Good Time, a ticking timebomb which is defused and activated over and over. The score is optimistic, contrasting the pittance of Howard's life and the performances are fantastic throughout.
Now the Safdie brothers have proven their capabilities, I hope that there next project differs from these past two. There is no denying the similarities with Good Time; this isnt a bad thing, I'm just eager to see where the duo goes next!1 member likes this review.
