  • WHAT I LIKED: Mike Mills' '20th Century Women,' is engaging for a number of reasons, but what's so striking about the efforts here are how thoroughly unique the approach to social commentary and character development is. Yes in a way this is a film where the direction and writing echoes the attitudes of the main characters as it's almost flippant and often very amusing, but also has some very meaningful and emotional undertones that reflect the difficulty of everyday life really beautifully. In that respect, it deals with things in a very touching and natural way which means its themes not only transcend very effectively, but its characters also feel like real people in their real worlds. As a result, you'll likely remain thoroughly engaged throughout a narrative that's not all that jam-packed, as well as properly charmed and occasionally moved by watching these people go through their situations accepting the realities we all face no matter how different we are, and enjoying the simple joys as they go.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Its flippant approach does arguably stop it becoming truly profound or powerful.
VERDICT: '20th Century Women,' is a very touching film that deals with the realities of life with the same flippancy of its charming main characters. What a lovely piece of work.
