  • Only God Forgives is an artistic masterpiece. The film experiments with color contrast, different camera angles, character representation through color, and all sorts of interesting artistic things. The action sequences in this film are spectacular, and akin to those of Akira Kurosawa in his heyday; with meaningful movements, and emotional weight to each fight, the film has too much honor for its own good, and this is where the film falls into its problems. Our main character has only about 17 lines in the whole film. This would be good if the movie was a fast-paced, kinetic bad-ass action thriller, but having an anti-loquacious protagonist in an artistic film keeps the film at a stalemate, and prevents it from reaching the heights of films like Drive (2013). The film leaves a lot to the imagination, and whether you'll like this movie or not will depend on your ability to analyse and draw conclusions for yourself, otherwise you'll find the film a meaningless expression, and a waste of the director's talent. Only God Forgives succeeds on the fronts it wishes to hit, but does not do enough with the aspects it sidelines, and therefore can never be a truly fantastic achievement.
