  • The Mummy; a remake of the beloved 1999 version starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is reimagined as the start of a new Monsters Universe from Universal called The Dark Universe. This time it stars Tom Cruise as Nick Morton, an archaeologist ex-soldier who uncovers the secret Mummy tomb.

Tom Cruise is Hollywood's answer to 'Action Man' but he even he can't save this one.'The Mummy' is packed full of impressive stunts and non-stop action, but lacks any real depth and emotive connection to the characters. The previous 'The Mummy' although was tongue in cheek humour and cheesy plot, there was a certain charm it had that made it so loved. You connected with the characters of Rick O'Connell and Evie, you never connect with Nick or the rest of the other cast.

The sense of mystery is eradicated and it lacks any real development, just catastrophe after catastrophe with Tom Cruise running and fighting from the scene. It ends up being a film without identity, without substance and quickly becomes dull,  I was soon uninterested by the whole idea. The addition of Russel Crowe as Dr. Jekyll playing a Monster version of Nick Fury underlines the direction of this universe - laughable. I admire Crowe but you have to question why he agreed to be part of this monster franchise.

Now while the universe spanning across different movies is all the rage, with Marvel leading the way. This take feels misguided and cheap. The classic stories of Frankenstein were classics for a reason, they had horror and depth to them that transcended 'monster'. This just screams 'bandwagon'. A cheap and insulting way to treat the characters created in all those classic stories. The Mummy was never a specific character and while I can see re-imagining classic monster movies is probably worthy, this is not the direction one had hoped to see. You cannot simply take Marvels formula and squeeze it into your own idea. It has to born through knowledge and love for the characters which The Mummy never has.
