  We’re living in an age of superheroes, and cinema has never looked more masculine. Now though, we have Barbie, a blockbuster built to step on all of that flexing muscle, clanging metal and explosions (CF. Oppenheimer) with dainty pink heels, blonde locks and glamorous clothes. But when you sit down and watch it, the real reason this feels like such an important summer movie is because writer/director Greta Gerwig has managed to use this doll and her world to make a surprisingly direct film about the pitfalls of the patriarchy.
