Differing greatly from Stephen King's novel, Brian De Palma's Carrie is a cruelly vivisected experiment for De Palma who uses bizarre editing and camera techniques, Hitchcockian inspiration, and tonal shifts so jarring there should be a health warning for whiplash. Yet, amongst the mayhem, there are moments that are pure cinematic bliss. The intricate slow motions tracks, the explosive, operatic performances from Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek, and tragically scalding moments undoubtedly leave Carrie as a horror classic. While the film sacrifices King's original message of the novel, it opts to boost De Palma's filmmaking ability, swapping pure tragedy for a knighthood of a future king of cinema.
