  • WHAT I LIKED: 'The Thursday Murder Club,' is the kind of film that goes down nicely with a cup of tea on a Sunday afternoon.

Four tenants at a palatial old folks home investigate unsolved crimes together, but when one of the home's owners is killed, they end up sneakily gathering evidence and helping a young Police Officer with the case.

There's just about enough intrigue in the plot, but what really keeps you smiling is the charming characters. There's the cunning, cutthroat leader of the pack, ex-diplomat NAME (Helen Mirren), the brilliantly sarcastic ex-union man NAME (Pierce Brosnan), bookish NAME (Ben Kingsley), and devilishly excitable new recruit NAME (Celia Emrie). Delivered by such charming performances, they make for a brilliant group of people to hang around with for a couple of hours, and you long for them to succeed and bring the perpetrators to justice.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The mystery plot relies on a few contrivances and isn't hugely complex, and the film doesn't make much effort to ring any tension out of it either.

VERDICT: 'The Thursday Murder Club,' is nothing more than a cosy couple of hours with some delightful characters.
