  • WHAT I LIKED: The Chef in 'The Menu,' is tired of working to his rich, asshole customers' approvals, so he decides to kill them all over the course of one evening at his pretentious island restaurant. The whole thing becomes a slow, course-by-course unravelling of his plan and his reasons for hating for everyone in the room - from the pernickety critics and businessmen, to those who worship his work regardless of its quality - and the conceit is that we'll all be on the edge of our seats waiting to see what happens.

The only really engaging thing though is the one unexpected guest Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) who has also spent her life serving others, as her attempts to first fathom and then escape the nightmare that's unfolding make her the one sane gateway into the madness that surrounds.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: You wont really care about what happens to anyone apart from Margot because the chef is clearly derranged, and the other customers are clearly awful. That makes for an oddly low-stakes thriller, and one whose social commentary isn't all that smart when you think about it.

VERDICT: Central character aside, after you've figured out what's going on in 'The Menu,' it's hard to care whether a deranged chef gets revenge on his awful customers or not.
