Jason Bourne is a film I have mixed feelings about; it is a film that has enjoyable aspects, but also a lot of flaws. Most of my issues with this movie stem from the writing. When it comes to the Bourne films, I have always expected a well-written and complex yet appealing story, and unfortunately, this installment missed the boat on this front. For me the story feel flat, it didn’t have the suspenseful and deep elements that make the Bourne franchise great and honestly, the story just didn’t interest me. Along with the dull story, I found that some of the dialogue was cheesy and terrible written. The writer kept throwing random useless hot topic keywords around, hoping they would make the film more appealing and relevant in the modern world, which it didn’t.

This film also violates one of my personal cardinal movie sins, in that it features the stupid magic “Enhance” button that can take a blurry image and instantly make it crystal clear. Some of you might laugh at this, but for me, this is one of the most annoying things modern films can do, and many do do it!

The saving grace for this film is the third act when all of the parties converge on Las Vegas. This is when the movie stopped trying so hard on the story front and reverted back to what Paul Greengrass does best, and that is high octane action. The car chase and fight scenes that take place in Vegas are some of the best I have seen in recent years. They have that staple real and gritty feel that Greengrass does so well.

Jason Bourne (2016) unfortunately does not live up to the original trilogies glory. The lackluster story leads to a slightly boring and sometimes tacky first half, but the film steps it up for an intense and suspenseful third act. This is my least favorite film of the entire Bourne franchise. I give Jason Bourne (2016) a 6 out of 10.
