  Gory, subversive and rife with twists and turns, Audition clearly tells me that Takashi Miike revels in the unfamiliar. He shuffles the deck rather than putting it into a neat order from ace to king. While this is commendable, I couldn't find anything to dig into in this film. I don't see it as a feminist piece because the relationship between our central characters is unbalanced and doesn't address gender with any veracity. It's an enjoyable J-horror piece with brilliant horror moments but I couldn't find much under the surface in this film.
