I hate to be that guy, but I didn’t care for The Shape of Water. The direction and special effects were top notch, but the fact that it won Best Picture at the Oscars puzzles me. Though Sally Hawkins does well enough in her role, Michael Shannon chews up scenery like a jaguar. You want your standard villain? He’s right here. Octavia Spencer was under-used and is at risk of becoming typecast. The whole film just didn’t fit together in a way I found believeable or all that interesting. It’s a twist on your standard fairytale, but is it one that warranted a film? I don’t think so.0 member like this review.
